Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

History

It all begin in 1869

Plans were made to organize a church in Gunston, Virginia. Since there was no church available for them, the members walked to Shiloh Baptist Church located in Alexandria, Virginia where they were free to sing, pray, and worship God.

  • The first meeting was held in a log cabin situated on a one acre plot set aside by the owner of Gunston Hall Plantation, Colonel Edward Daniels, for use as a school for black children. The land was located across from our present church in front of our historic cemetery.
Reverend John Webb is believed to have been the first pastor of the original church and perhaps helped organize it. Unfortunately this building burned to the ground.
  • On November 18, 1879, Trustee Relius Allen and Trustee Archie Gilliam purchased one acre of land near the Gunston Hall entrance. The first Shiloh Baptist Church was built of logs on the site. The cemetery was also established on this property. The Gilliam, Berry, Gant, Blackburn, Williams’ and other families were among those who helped organize the church. In 1900 an additional acre of land was purchased across the road from the original property. This property included the Gunston white school which served as the congregation’s second meeting house. Some of the early leaders of the church were Deacon William Jones, Deacon William Freeman, Deacon William Mack, Deacon David Mack, Deacon John Bushrod, Sr., and Deacon Charles Kye.

  • In 1925 the steeple was added, and Shiloh began to look like a church. As the physical facility was being enhanced, the spiritual menu was also being expanded to meet the ever-growing demands of the emerging congregation. In 1927 a vestibule and cement steps were added to the building.

  • The Groundbreaking Service for our current Sanctuary was held on August 11, 1984. The new edifice included an indoor baptismal pool, which was dedicated on September 8, 1985. Prior to 1950 candidates for Baptism were baptized during the spring and summer months in the Potomac River in front of Gunston Hall. The former sanctuary remains attached and is now known as the Gladys C. Bushrod Fellowship Hall.

  • The $300,000 mortgage was burned nine years later by approximately forty active members. Paying off the mortgage was primarily accomplished by the member’s tithes and general offerings. In addition brass plates were sold and installed as bricks in the main sanctuary, as a memorial to loved ones and other contributors.

  • Final negotiations and settlement on the adjoining six-acre Alma Bushrod property were completed on December 3, 1999 and dedicated on December 12, 1999. On August 15, 2002, two trailers were purchased from Fairfax County Public Schools for use as additional classrooms, a conference room, and a prayer room. They became operational in early 2004. Additionally, two acres of land adjoining the church property were purchased in 2004.

  • In May 2010 the mortgage on the Alma Bushrod property was paid off. In 2011 the Fairfax County History Commission designated Shiloh as a historical landmark and erected a marker on the property. The Annex building, which replaced the trailers, was constructed in 2019 and dedicated on September 12, 2021.

  • Throughout the years, Shiloh has been blessed with a total of seventeen pastors and three interim pastors. In July 2022 after serving as pastor for twenty years, Dr. Luther M. Bailey retired.

  • Rev. John H. Mitchell Jr. was installed as pastor on April 30, 2023. He is married to Desirea Moore-Mitchell and they have two daughters, Jacqueline and Chloe.

  • With a current membership of one hundred twelve, Shiloh’s calling within this community is to continually bring the Word of God, a sense of hope, a loving spirit, and a feeling of belonging to all who enter these sacred walls.

  • We believe that back in 1869 Shiloh was founded in faith, nurtured by hope and preserved in love (1 Corinthians 13:13). In 2024 Shiloh remains committed to Kingdom Building (1 Samuel 7:28).
